Sunnyvale is accessible by 3 nearby international airports- Norman Y. Minesta San Jose International Airport, Metropolitan Oakland International Airport and the San Francisco International Airport, all are within easy reach to Sunnyvale.  From these airports, you can either take a bus or rent a car available at the airport to reach Sunnyvale. 

Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC): The Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport is located approx 10 miles from Downtown Sunnyvale. Several major airlines serve the airport. From SJC, Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) buses, Caltrain and VTA light rail are available to Sunnyvale. It is your best and convenient airport close to Sunnyvale. At the airport, the free Airport Flyer Bus no. 10 is available that connects to Santa Clara Transit System, from where you can take a Caltrain or VTA bus no. 22 to Sunnyvale. Both the VTA bus and Caltrain stops at several places in Sunnyvale. If you prefer taking a cab/ taxi, then the taxi fare from SJC to Sunnyvale ranges between $27 and $30.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO): The San Francisco International Airport is located approx 29 miles from Downtown Sunnyvale via car. It is the 7th busiest airport in the US and is served by several major airlines. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and Caltrain from Sunnyvale offers service to SFO and vice-versa. Many rental car companies also operate at the SFO to reach Sunnyvale.

Oakland International Airport (OAK): The Oakland International Airport is located approx 37 miles from Sunnyvale via car. It is served by several airlines, including Southwest Airlines, Allegiant Air, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian Airlines and Spirit Airlines. From OAK to Sunnyvale and vice-versa, buses, rental cars and multiple transfers are available.

Getting to Sunnyvale by VTA Bus and Light Rail Service

Sunnyvale is served by Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) buses and Greyhound bus lines.

The Valley Transportation Authority (VTA)  serves Santa Clara Valley and San Jose with 69 bus routes and a light rail service.  The VTA bus offers service to Santa Clara County that includes Sunnyvale, too. Some of the bus routes connect to the VTA light rail service and Caltrain stations. 

The VTA light rail service operates in Sunnyvale, Campbell, Mountain View, Santa Clara, Milpitas and San Jose.

Caltrain: Sunnyvale is served by Caltrain, which is a commuter train service in California between San Francisco and Santa Clara Valley. The Caltrain station in Sunnyvale is within walking distance of downtown Sunnyvale. The VTA bus 53 connects to Sunnyvale Caltrain.

Amtrak: Amtrak offers train service nationwide. The nearest station to Sunnyvale is in Santa Clara. Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor train and ACE (Altamont Corridor Express) train runs in Santa Clara.

Sunnyvale is serviced by several freeways and expressways, making it easy accessible by car. Some of them are: U.S. Highway 101, Central Expressway, I-280 also known as Junipero Serra Freeway, Lawrence Expressway, California State Route 82, California State Route 237 and California State Route 85.

Public Transportation in Sunnyvale

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority and Caltrain commuter train serves Sunnyvale. The Santa Clara VTA offers bus service around Sunnyvale. And, the Caltrain commuter rail has two stations in Sunnyvale- one is the Lawrence Station in east Sunnyvale and the other is the Sunnyvale Caltrain Station in the Downtown heritage district.

Getting Around Sunnyvale by Bus

The Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) offers bus service around Sunnyvale. Bus no. 22 on El Camino Real is the major bus route and several other bus lines connect to it. Bus no. 522 on El Camino Real is an express bus service. Also, buses 53, 54 and 55 serve Sunnyvale.
